An EU alternative to Linode / Akamai Cloud: Unio Cloud compared
Linode was the original indie VPS host - beloved docs, flat pricing, and the most-downloaded Terraform provider of the developer clouds. Since Akamai acquired it in 2022 for around $900 million, it has been progressively absorbed into "Akamai Connected Cloud": linode.com pricing now redirects to akamai.com, and docs are split across three domains.
For European teams the calculus is familiar: solid product, US parent company, dollar pricing at several times EU rates. And the Akamai transition adds a new question - what does an indie-turned-enterprise platform look like in five years? Here is how it compares to an EU-only alternative.
Linode (Akamai) at a glance
- Jurisdiction
- Linode LLC, owned by Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM, HQ Cambridge, Massachusetts) since March 2022. US parent - CLOUD Act applies.
- Comparable plan
- Linode 8GB (g6-standard-4): 4 vCPU / 8 GB / 160 GB SSD / 5 TB transfer - $48/mo (≈ €42). Dedicated 8GB: $72/mo.
- EU data centers
- Six EU cities (Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid, Milan, Stockholm) plus London.
- API
- Proprietary REST API v4, linode-cli, partner-tier Terraform provider (~16M downloads).
- Billing
- Hourly, rounded up to the nearest hour, capped at the monthly price; global pooled transfer with $0.005/GB overage - the cheapest egress of the US developer clouds.
- Object storage
- S3-compatible, $5/mo incl. 250 GB + 1 TB added to the transfer pool.

Why teams look for a Linode (Akamai) alternative
The price gap does not close
The shared 4 vCPU / 8 GB plan is $48/month - roughly €42 - versus €7.79 at Unio. Even Linode's standout numbers, like $0.005/GB egress overage, only matter after you have consumed a transfer pool that Unio simply makes four times larger per server.
A US parent, now twice over
Linode was always a US company; today it is a subsidiary of Akamai, a US-listed CDN giant. For CLOUD Act purposes nothing about a Frankfurt or Milan region changes that. An EU-owned provider is the only configuration where the question does not arise.
Platform transition risk
The Linode-to-Akamai migration is visible in public: redirected pricing pages, docs split across domains, new plan generations with different terms. None of it is disqualifying, but if you are re-evaluating providers anyway, it is fair to weigh where the platform is heading against alternatives built on open standards.
Portable automation
Linode's Terraform provider is the most-downloaded of its peers - which shows how much automation teams have invested. All of it is Linode-specific. OpenStack-based automation transfers between providers; that investment compounds instead of locking you in.
When Linode (Akamai) is the right call
- You benefit from Akamai's edge: if pairing VMs with the Akamai CDN and edge network is your architecture, the integration is the point.
- Your workloads are egress-heavy toward non-EU users - the pooled transfer and $0.005/GB overage are genuinely the best in this class.
- You want a two-decade-old platform today; Unio Cloud is onboarding from a waitlist.
